His comrades had wronged Marcus, and he felt angry and betrayed. But he remembered the proverb:
"The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury."

Through this thought, Marcus was able to find peace of mind. He decided responding with bitterness and rage would not do him any good. Instead, he chose to take the higher ground and remain steadfast in his beliefs.
He proved that even under immense duress, one can hold their ground with strength yet remain compassionate for others like them. In doing so, Marcus was victorious—even better than if he had sought typical revenge.
